Be patient when awaiting ERP results

1/12/2012 at 2:13 pm by

Enterprise resource planning, when properly implemented, represents an enormous upgrade on the processes and operations of any organization. Some businesses simply want to streamline existing practices, while others might use the opportunity of an installation as a chance to massively overhaul their entire business model and organizational pattern. The only constant between the two is the improved functionality that ERP systems bestow on companies.

Interestingly, the amount of time that companies have to wait before they realize self-professed improved businesses processes won't be short lived. While there is generally an immediate uptick following an implementation, a recent study by IT Toolbox found that most organizations will continue to see benefits for the following eight years after their enterprise resource planning application suites have gone live.

This is very good news for companies that are on the fence about embracing this sort of business software. For the most part, companies that are investigating the return on investment (ROI) that software can offer them don't peer more than a year or two into the future. Even this short time frame is enough to recoup the cost of enterprise resource planning systems, but even more time will add traditional performance upgrades. Here are some reasons why.

Execution
The plain and simple fact of the matter is that ERP software gives companies the opportunity to considerably improve their ability to execute projects. Planning is a crucial part of any project, but without the right information at one's disposal, execution is remarkably difficult. ERP systems make it possible for businesses to foresee problems and counteract them before they can delay the implementation of a project.

Performance evaluation
With the additional data that ERP systems provide, it is possible to make better evaluations about operations and types of functionality. Essentially, organizations can attach numerical amounts and dollar values to different aspects of their work and find out which activities are most profitable, which need work and which should be abandoned entirely. Every year that this ability is possessed by a company is another year that it learns to judge its efforts more accurately.

Additional software
When companies find that they have improved their ability to execute tasks and plan for the future thanks to enterprise resource planning, there is a good chance that they'll realize why it was all possible. Business software is extremely powerful, so the more of it that proves to be successful, the more that organizations will embrace it.
