Sage ERP Accpac 6.0A and the Technologies it is Based On
2/3/2011 at 9:48 am bySage ERP Accpac 6.0A is a very exciting release for everyone in Accpac R&D. With this version we introduce our new Web Based architecture. Here we are entering the true Web World where we only run HTML and JavaScript in the Browser. All the new technologies are true zero-client installations for reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and easy deployment.
Our new framework for developing Web Based Screens is the Sage Web Toolkit (SWT) based on the Google Web Toolkit (GWT) which is a powerful Ajax based set of tools that allows us to develop powerful Web based applications quickly in the same manner that Google does. With the Google Web Toolkit we develop all our programs entirely in Java, but when done the GWT Compiler converts all the Java code to JavaScript that can run in the Browser.
Another key technology is SData which is a Restful Web Service interface. All our communications with the server go through SData which is based on HTTP (or HTTPS). This means it won’t be affected by firewalls or cause security problems. SData is a Sage wide standard and third parties can use SData to integrate with a wide variety of Sage products. This then has the additional benefit of offering a full Web Services interface to all of Accpac.
Our Web Server uses a combination of Microsoft’s Internet Information Server (IIS) and Apache Tomcat. IIS serves up static content like HTML and image files. Apache Tomcat is the Java application server and processes the SData requests. Our SData processor converts the SData web requests into standard Accpac Business Logic API call, so we use our Business Logic unmodified from previous versions.
Sage ERP Accpac 6.0A includes a new Web Portal, or Web Desktop that will be the new entry point or face of Accpac. From here you can see many KPIs that are of interest to your business.
This technology is foundational and easy to adapt to new domains. For instance we can rapidly roll out Mobile support, since mobile devices like iPhones, Android Phones and iPads all have good Browsers that can work with our Web based screens.
Similarly now that we are web based it will be easy to integrate to Social Media sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Quora, etc.
